03202001 Bad End

I enjoy stories which have "depressing" or "bad" endings, the kind of ending that leavesyou thanking the glut of stories we remember or tell with "good" endings. Why I feel myself drawn to such depressing stories as a whole confuses me, I generally like to think of myself as a very optimistic and easy going person. I think part of my facination with the subject is that enjoy an interesting narrative, regardless of the outcome. If the ride to the conclusion of a story was still interesting then in a way it shouldn't matter the final outcome - it's outcome just happens to be depressing at this point in the story.

The Universe and all of it's people seem to be the most interesting story that I know of - albeit a very long story for our lifepans. At the very end of the Universe it will be exactly that, time (which cannot exist without space) will stop; and space (which cannot exist without time), will cease to exist, for whatever that means. So even if we completely end up ruling the cosmos our story will end with everything everywhere no longer existing (as we currently know it). There is no way around it and it's completely and totally unfair.

So at the end of any particular story that ends up not going the hero's way, it just gives me confidence that yes - the Universe is still at work, entropy exists at all levels.
